Horror of Fang Rock

I forgot to tell you! I watched my first episode of Classic!Who the other day! I watched Horror of Fang Rock, a Four/Leela episode. There were a couple things that stood out to me that I'd like to share:

The MOMENT the TARDIS materialized, a smile split onto my face.

Lighthouse dude: Are you in charge here?
Doctor: No, but I'm full of ideas.

Doctor: Gentlemen, I have news for you: This lighthouse is under attack and by morning we might all be dead.  [huge smile]
WOW, time after time I'm seeing 11 in 4. ...or should I say 4 in 11? Gah. This is confusing.

I noticed that a lot of the humor was very subtle. Like, one joke that I managed to catch was after Leela broke a panel of a door with a sledge hammer to see what the possessed lighthouse man was up to:
Doctor: The Malicious Act of Damage covers lighthouses.
Leela: What?
Doctor: Nothing.

And then a throw back:
Doctor: Leela, don't fire until you see the green of his tentacles

Dude, Tom Baker's eyes are flippin' wide and crazy. Matches his smile.

I loved, and I mean LOVED the Rutan's cheesy alien blobiness. It was priceless, which I suppose is a good thing considering the Beeb's budget back then. waap, waaaaap.

I liked Leela. Had a very go-get-'em style about her, which I suppose has something to do with her history that my dad and tardis.wikia.com informed me about. What the internet did not tell me and that my Dad so kindly told me was that Leela was a fan favorite. "Pretty young woman running around in a leather bikini? Oh yeah."

All in all, I enjoyed the episode, though not nearly as much as I enjoy some of the Nu!Who episodes, particularly S5. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or think I should have seen a different episode as my introduction to Classic!Who? Send me your thoughts!

City of Death, City of Death, City of Death.

It's hilarious, it's clever, it has Four and Romana being adorable, and you'll immediately notice how much Moffat references it.

Noted! Thanks for the rec and LOVING your icon!

It's what Moffat wants to be when he grows up *nodnod*

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
He wants to be City of Death? AHAHHA

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes he dresses up as France in readiness for that day.

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
This just made me lol.

[identity profile] stick-poker.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
(I can just see him dressed up as Napoleon, now...)

That is one of my favorites because I liked that gothic style they did including Pyramids of Mars, Masque of Mandragora and Talons of Weng Chiang. The last is a favorite but it has also come under criticism due to sterotypes. I think if you want to try a First Doctor, go with The Aztecs, a great historical. Two is pretty limited because of "wiping" and of the ones that are complete, they tend to drag abit. You can use your own judgment there. As for Three, I love The Time Monster because it's fun and introduces Sarah Jane. Hm, Five. I like Black Orchid because it was historical. Earthshock is pretty good too. Six I have a tough time with because I don't really have one that I love to re-watch. For Seven I like Remembrance of the Daleks and Curse of Fenric.

I'm glad you're taking the step to watch classic Who. SOme of your decisions will depend on what style you like

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Woohoo! That's a lot of rec's going on there! I'll try and check those out. It's sad there's so many missing from Two; that was one that Matt Smith really liked. =/ As for Six, I have an LJ buddy (the one who does the [livejournal.com profile] hoctor_do comic who really enjoys Six. Perhaps I'll ask her what she recommends.

[identity profile] alibi-factory.livejournal.com 2011-03-12 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
LOL HELLLLOOOOO

Six is hard because, well, most of his tv serials are crappy (I love them anyway!). "Vengeance on Varos" and "Revelation of the Daleks" are probably the best. Both are kind of emotionally dismal, though. "The Two Doctors" is fun, but best watched after you've seen a bit of Two.

Seconding the rec for "Curse of Fenric". It works better if you've watched the rest of Ace's arc, but even on its own it's fantastic - it's got Themes and pretty great monster costumes and Ace being a bamf in a snood.

HMMM. Others, uh, "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" is my fave 1st Doctor, but I haven't seen much of him. "Tomb of the Cyberman" is a good Two story to kick off with ("The Mind Robber" is my favorite but it's cray-cray); I'm in the middle of "The Invasion", which is an animated reconstruction and actually really neatly done. Three's serials tend towards the endless, maybe go for one of the shorter ones? "Spearhead From Space" is his first episode and is pretty banging, iirc. Four, "City of Death", ugh FOREVER. If you are interested in more Leela, "The Robots of Death" is a good one. Fiiiiiive, hmm. "Mawdryn Undead", maybe? It's got timey-wimey and crazy noodle brained dudes and Turlough, who is sassy and ginger.

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-12 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew you'd turn up! :D:D

Oooh, thanks for all the rec's! I'm going to be busy in the next few months with all of these... I liked Leela but I really want to see other companions, particularly ones referenced in Nu!Who (& spin offs), like Jo Grant and Sarah Jane.

Thanks again!

[identity profile] deadlybeauty32.livejournal.com 2011-03-13 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Three Doctors"

XD That may be the only classic who that I've watched! I think I tried to watch something...it was with Four & Romana and they went to Paris. I got like 30 minutes in and got bored. (damn my attention span).

But the Three Doctors is pretty funny. the Second Doctor wears a bowtie, so you know it's cool. ;D

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-13 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHHA I love that ending statement. Sold!

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay Classic Who! (I see you've got a lot of recs so I won't leave any.)

I've seen a few eps from each Doctor, and I keep seeing all of them in Eleven. It's so cool.

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
that should be "from each Doctor's era". *facepalm*

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha Yeah, I got a lot to catch up, apparently! :D

And no worries about the typo-- totaly guilty!

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
... Wow. Case in point. *totally >_< Completely unintentional, I swear.

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-15 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
There are so many episodes. And then there are novels, and audio books, and cartoons... ;)

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-15 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be into manga when I was younger... maybe I'd enjoy the comics. :D

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-15 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
(Oops, word!failed again! I meant comics, obviously, as you understood. I should get off the Internet or something...)

I haven't read any of the comics, but from the previews I've seen they look decent enough! I'm sure I've seen a bit of someone's manga style comic with Ten, but I'm not sure if that was fanart or an actual comic. XD It was beautiful anyway!

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
HAHA I'm a mind reader. *cue creepy music*

Speaking of manga style Doctor Who comics, have you seen this?: http://carrots-areyouinsane.tumblr.com/post/3865670683/wifeofbath-love-this-presentation-of-new-whos

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-16 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooooh!

I had not seen that! That is awesome! *saves* I hadn't seen that Tumblr either. It's also awesome.

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-16 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that drawing totally played up on my childhood obsession with my current one and I WAS LOVING IT. If you still have the link to the manga style Ten comic, I'd love to check it out. :D

[identity profile] honeynoir.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
I've looked for the comic and aarrrgh can't find it! I'll let you know if I do!

[identity profile] stick-poker.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to say, CITY OF DEATH, yes, and also, hooray for watching some Classic Who. The first one I watched was Robot, the first Four story, and I had a sort of brainstorm moment when I realised it had the Doctor in it; not a different character which the new series has borrowed bits from, but himself, what the new series is an extension of, albeit that there are variations. The irreverence and the irrepressibility aren't quirks of the modern Doctors, they're the cornerstone of the whole character.

If you're finding cheap cheesy blobby aliens to be endearing and not off-putting, too, then basically there's nothing standing between you and all of the goodness of Classic Who, as far as I can tell...

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, and yes. I suppose that's what I really enjoyed about watching the Doctor, was seeing all the little quirks that I adored about him are character traits, not just personal takes on the same character.

If you're finding cheap cheesy blobby aliens to be endearing and not off-putting, too, then basically there's nothing standing between you and all of the goodness of Classic Who, as far as I can tell...

HAHAH Then I'm set! Bring it on!!

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think Tennant got his "Weeeeeell" from Tom Baker, because he didn't do it before School Reunion and then it turned up everywhere after that.

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, sneaky sneaky!!! I didn't hear four use his "Weeeeell" in this series, but perhaps in the future!

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Weeeeeeeell, it's more later on when Tom's gone director-proof and is just playing himself with a time machine.

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
OMG I CAN'T WAIT. Do I see that in The City of Death?

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
YUS!

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Leela <3

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Like everyone else says, City of Death. It has Romana and lols and France and the Mona Lisa. I would say anything with Romana but a lot of her stories, erm, look very cheap. But they are lulsy to make up for it, mostly.

Leela's intro story Face of Evil is quite good if you like her.

I love Seven'n'Ace best so I must say Survival and Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light although that last one takes more a bit attention than the others I find. They work better if you've seen Ace's arc unfold, but they are pretty awesomecakes anyway.

Revelation of the Daleks for Six, probably you want a Master story for Three but then I love Delgado!Master more than I love Three and wish to be his evil companion of evilness.

If you're willing to go black & white then maybe The Mind Robber or Edge of Destruction which is short?

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
o hai!

Thank you SO much for all the rec's! I definitely have to check out City of Death. I've heard so much about Romana, it'd be interesting to see if I like her as much as everyone else. :) As for B&W, I grew up in the age of personal calculators so I think it'll take some warming up to get to that point. But in time, m'dear, in time.

"What a wonderful butler, he's so violent!"

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2011-03-22 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I love Romana. River reminds me of her a bit, actually. Plus I ship Doctor/Romana liek teh woah so I tend to squee a lot while watching those ones. ("OMG THEY ARE IN TEH SAME ROOM. THAT MEANS THEY WANT TO HAVE BABIES TOGETHER.") Also City of Death is Douglas Adams under a fake name so it has that going for it as well.

PS: Eleventy is hawt in your icon there, rawr.

HAHAHAHAHAHA You're rolling out the punches tonight, you know that? Then again, I remember a particular Doctor/Master meme that made me laugh until I cried, so I got a sneaky suspicion this is a regular occurrence for you.

You know... I always thought that in musicals when a man and a woman had a duet, it was musical for, "We're totes doin it right nao lol".

The icon keyword for this one is GUH MATT SMITH. Self-explanatory.

Revelation of the Daleks mainly made me go 'Alexei Sayle! Alexei Sayle! And Richaaaaard from Keeping Up Appearances!' But then non-Brits never have so much trouble with that. (But Alexei Sayle!)

[identity profile] tasty-kate.livejournal.com 2011-03-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
<-- totally a non-Brit. However, you did educate me about Bernard Cribbins who I utterly fell in love with. Wilf is, hands down, the best companion. Ever.
