Did it again with the rpf... Wrote it for a promt: community.livejournal.com/mattkaren/31243.html Ugh, I really ought to stop this.
Tree after tree passed her by. She twirled on her back so that she could watch the clouds fly by her. It was exhilarating, the air rushing on her face, like the time she rode that motorcycle except now it’s just her… flying down the street of her childho—
A buzzing noise with two dull rings startled her out of her dream. After a moment of confusion, she realized that it was her mobile going off with either a voice mail or text message. If it was a voice mail and she slept through that, she must have been in a deep sleep.
She picked up her mobile. Nope, text. From Matt. The light blinded her from the large screen.
Matt: You awake?
She swallowed down her irritation and looked at the alarm clock on her nightstand. It read 2.09. She tapped at her touch screen phone and typed out “am now thnx 2 u.” She usually doesn’t use that horrific of text talk, but she was tired and wanted to convey that.
She pressed send and set the phone next to her in the duvet. A couple minutes passed and she figured she was in the clear and started to drift back. Now, where was she…
BZZbeepZZbeepZZbeepZZ
She did a half snore/half gasp at the noise. This time she tilted her phone down to keep the glare away from her face.
Matt: Sorry. I just got something bugging me, but it can wait until the morning. G’night. xx
She sighed. He always did this. Guilt trip her in the most incontinent times. She thought if she had anything to do early in the morning and when her mental planner came up blank, she text him back. May as well open this can of worms. “whats up? im awake now.”
This time she kept her eyes open and alert for his next text. It came quicker this time.
Matt: No, no, go back to sleep. I’ll be fine. G’night again. xx
She grumbled. No way was he going to get his way, now that she was awake. She took a breath. If she came off as snippy through the text, he really wouldn’t tell her. She tapped at the screen again, “whats up, matt? i wont be able to go back to sleep unless you tell me.”
Matt: What would you do if you wanted to let someone know you fancied them without scaring them away?
Karen stared at the screen. Fancied someone? Her heart pounded in her ears. She did remember hearing somewhere that he and that model were no longer together. Could he mean…? Surely not. It was probably someone else. She ignored that feeling of her heart dropping to the bottom of her stomach. She figured she would just answer it as objectively as she could.
Karen: is it someone new or an old friend?
Matt: Old friend.
Karen: thats tough… i gota think about this one. h/o.
Matt: K
Ugh, biggest pet peeve. Why do people waste text messages on the letter “k”?
Now, let’s see, if she were in his position, what would she do? She figured the best way to approach this would be to put herself in his shoes. What if she fancied Matt? She giggled to herself. Not too hard to think about… She would want it to be someplace where it was private, but not terribly secluded in case she was rejected. That way, they could easily divert their attention elsewhere. So maybe some place simple like a coffee shop or in a park. There would be easy ways to leave the situation as opposed to a restaurant where they would have to stay until their meals were finished. She liked that.
Karen: i would take the person to a coffee shop or a park. and just say it w/o beating around the bush.
A couple of minutes went by.
Matt: I like that idea. Thanks, Kaz. So any plans tomorrow?
Karen: meeting my mum for tea but thats bout it.
Matt: Where you meeting her?
Karen: right by green park in town @ this little family-owned restaurant.
Matt: Oh yeah, right. I know that place. Would you like to meet me in the park before you have tea?
Karen stared at her phone for the second time that night. She flipped back through her sent text messages and re-read the one she sent him about the suggestions. Yeah, specifically said “park” and now he’s inviting her to one. Coincidence? Her mind was in a jumble. What should she say? What should she say? Her phone buzzed again in her hand.
Matt: Or maybe coffee? Would you like to grab a cup after your tea?
She could feel her cheeks starting to burn. Was he serious? Did he just seriously do that?? If she was flustered before, she didn’t even know where she was now. She just stared at the two text messages and slowly let everything process in her brain. Then Matt’s picture came up on her screen and her ring tone was playing. He was calling her. Oh dear god…
“He-hello?” she answered.
“So what do you say? You? Me? Park then coffee? Or maybe coffee then park? I’m flexible.”
She was so glad he wasn’t present right then or he would have seen her mouth open and close like a fish. “I… I got to have tea with me Mum.”
“Okay, so park before tea and coffee afterwards?”
She stuttered, “Sure.”
“Great. I’ll meet you by the bus stop at Green Park around 4:00. You know the one?”
“Yeah,” she said breathless as if she had been running. He sounded so cool and confident!
“Great. Sorry for keeping you awake, Kaz. I’ll see you tomorrow. Good night.”
“Night.” She saw the light turn on her phone again from the call ending but still held it up by her face. Did that just happen?
